10-14절, 강이 에덴에서 흘러 나와 동산을 적시고 거기서부터 갈라져 네 근원이 되었으니 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from thence it was parted, and was into four heads. 첫째의 이름은 비손이라 금이 있는 하윌라 온 땅을 둘렀으며 The name of the first is Pishon; that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. 그 땅의 금은 순금이요 그 곳에는 베델리엄과 호마노도 있으며 And the gold of that land is good; there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 둘째 강의 이름은 기혼이라 구스 온 땅을 둘렀고 And the name of the second river is Gihon; the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Cush. 셋째 강의 이름은 힛데겔이라 앗수르 동쪽으로 흘렀으며 넷째 강은 유브라데더라 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel; that is it which goeth eastward toward Assyria; and the fourth river is Euphrates.

‘동산을 적시는 강’(the river in the garden)은 지혜를 가리킵니다. 네 개의 강이 있습니다. 첫 번째는 선과 진리를, 두 번째는 모든 선과 진리, 혹은 사랑과 신앙에 관한 지식[cognitio]을 가리킵니다. 이 둘은 속 사람에게 속합니다. 세 번째는 이성(reason)을, 네 번째는 기억-지식(memory-knowledge [scientia])을 가리키며, 이 둘은 겉 사람에게 속합니다. 모든 것이 지혜로부터 나오며, 지혜는 주님을 향한 사랑과 신앙으로부터 나오는 것입니다. (10-14절) Wisdom is meant by the river in the garden. From thence were four rivers, the first of which is good and truth; the second is the knowledge [cognitio] of all things of good and truth, or of love and faith. These are of the internal man. The third is reason, and the fourth is memory-knowledge [scientia], which are of the external man. All are from wisdom, and this is from love and faith in the Lord (verses 10–14).
