24절, 이같이 하나님이 그 사람을 쫓아내시고 에덴동산 동쪽에 그룹들과 두루 도는 불 칼을 두어 생명나무의 길을 지키게 하시니라 And he cast out the man; and he made to dwell from the east toward the garden of Eden cherubim, and the flame of a sword turning itself, to keep the way of the tree of lives.

여기서 첫 사람(the first man)에 대해 들으신 내용으로부터 분명한 것은, 오늘날 존재하는 모든 유전 악(the hereditary evil)은 그(him)에게서 온 게 아니라는 것인데요, 그건 잘못된 것입니다. 여기서 ‘사람’이라는 이름으로 다루어지고 있는 것은 태고교회(太古, the most ancient church)이며, 그 이름을 ‘아담’(Adam)이라고 할 때는, 사람은 땅(the ground)으로 말미암았다는 것, 즉 사람이 아니었다가 주님으로 말미암아 거듭나 사람이 되었음을 의미하기 때문입니다. From what is here said of the first man, it is evident that all the hereditary evil existing at the present day did not come from him, as is falsely supposed. For it is the most ancient church that is here treated of under the name of “man”; and when it is called “Adam,” it signifies that man was from the ground, or that from being nonman he became man by regeneration from the Lord.

 

※ 겉모습이 사람이라고 무조건 사람이 되는 게 아닙니다. 그 안에 주님의 신성이 깃들어야 비로소 ‘사람’이 되는 것입니다.

 

이것이 그 이름의 기원과 상징입니다. 유전 악에 대해서는, 그 경우는 이런데요, 실제 죄를 짓는 사람마다 자신에게 그로 인한 어떤 본성(a nature)을 초래하며, 그로 인한 악이 그의 어린 자녀들에게 심겨 유전됩니다. 유전 악은 그렇게 모든 부모로부터, 아버지, 할아버지, 증조부 및 가계를 따라 그들의 선조로부터 이어져 내려오며, 그렇게 저마다의 이어지는 후손 안에서 배가하고 증가합니다. 각 사람 안에 머무르며, 각자 실제 짓는 죄로 인해 증가하고, 절대 사람에게 해가 되지 않도록 저절로 소멸하는, 그런 일은 결단코 일어나지 않습니다. 주님으로 말미암아 거듭나고 있는 사람들을 제외하고는 말입니다. 주의 깊게 관찰하시는 분마다 다음과 같은 사실을 통해 이 진리의 증거를 보실 수 있는데요, 부모의 악한 경향은 자녀들 가운데 남는다는 게 눈에 보일 정도라는 사실 말입니다. 심지어 한 가계나 그 종족 전체가 그로 인해 다른 모든 가계나 종족들하고 구별될 수 있을 정도로 말입니다. This is the origin and signification of the name. But as to hereditary evil, the case is this. Everyone who commits actual sin thereby induces on himself a nature, and the evil from it is implanted in his children, and becomes hereditary. It thus descends from every parent, from the father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and their ancestors in succession, and is thus multiplied and augmented in each descending posterity, remaining with each person, and being increased in each by his actual sins, and never being dissipated so as to become harmless except in those who are being regenerated by the Lord. Every attentive observer may see evidence of this truth in the fact that the evil inclinations of parents remain visibly in their children, so that one family, and even an entire race, may be thereby distinguished from every other.
