17절, 아담에게 이르시되 네가 네 아내의 말을 듣고 내가 네게 먹지 말라 한 나무의 열매를 먹었은즉 땅은 너로 말미암아 저주를 받고 너는 네 평생에 수고하여야 그 소산을 먹으리라 And unto the man he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in great sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

다음은 합리적 능력의 퀄러티에 관한 설명입니다. 여기 보면, 이 합리적 능력은 자아, 즉 본성에 동의, 저주를 자초하더니 결국 지옥 같은 처지에 놓이게 되었습니다. 그러니까 더 이상 남아 있는 이성(理性, reason)은 없고, 대신 이성 노릇을 하는 추론 능력(推論, ratiocination)만 남게 된 것입니다. (17절) The quality of the rational is then described, in that it consented, and thus cursed itself, and became infernal, so that reason no longer remained, but ratiocination. (verse 17)
