이 장은 천적 인간에 관한 장입니다. 앞 장에서는 영적 인간을 다루었지요. 영적 인간은 영적으로 죽은 상태에 있었던 사람(a dead man)으로부터 빚어진 사람입니다. 그런데 오늘날은 천적 인간이 어떤 사람인지, 그리고 영적 인간이나 영적으로 죽은 상태에 있는 사람에 대해서도 거의 알려진 바가 없기 때문에, 주님은 저로 하여금 그 각각의 본성(nature)을 간략히 서술, 사람들로 하여금 그 차이점들을 먼저 좀 알 수 있게 하셨습니다. 그래서 먼저, 영적으로 죽은 상태에 있는 사람에 대한 설명입니다. 영적으로 죽은 사람은 진리와 선에 대해서는 아무것도 모르는 사람, 대신 오직 육체와 세상에 속한 것에 대해서만 잘 아는, 그리고 그런 걸 아주 좋아하는 그런 사람입니다. 다음은 영적 인간입니다. 영적 인간은 영적, 천적 진리와 선을 아는(acknowledges) 사람입니다. 그런데 단지 일종의 신앙 원리로 압니다. 이 신앙 원리는 그의 모든 행위의 기반과 같은 것입니다. 사랑이 기반이 아니고 말입니다. 끝으로, 천적 인간입니다. 천적 인간은 영적, 천적 진리와 선을 믿고 지각하는(perceives) 사람입니다. 천적 인간은 사랑에서 나오는 신앙, 행위가 뒤따르는 신앙밖에는 모르는 사람입니다. This chapter treats of the celestial man, as the preceding one did of the spiritual, who was formed out of a dead man. But as it is unknown at this day what the celestial man is, and scarcely what the spiritual man is, or a dead man, it is permitted me briefly to state the nature of each, that the difference may be known. First, then, a dead man acknowledges nothing to be true and good but what belongs to the body and the world, and this he adores. A spiritual man acknowledges spiritual and celestial truth and good; but he does so from a principle of faith, which is likewise the ground of his actions, and not so much from love. A celestial man believes and perceives spiritual and celestial truth and good, acknowledging no other faith than that which is from love, from which also he acts.

 

[2] 영적으로 죽은 상태에 있는 사람은 오직 육(肉)적, 세속적인(corporeal and worldly) 것만 추구합니다. 그들은 영원한 삶이 무엇인지도, 주님이 누구신지도 모릅니다. 혹시 알게 되어도 그들은 믿지 않습니다. 영적 인간의 경우는 영원한 삶입니다. 그 결과는 곧 주님이시지요. 천적 인간은 바로 처음부터 주님입니다. 그 결과는 주님의 나라와 영원한 삶이지요. Second: The ends which influence a dead man regard only corporeal and worldly life, nor does he know what eternal life is, or what the Lord is; or should he know, he does not believe. The ends which influence a spiritual man regard eternal life, and thereby the Lord. The ends which influence a celestial man regard the Lord, and thereby his kingdom and eternal life.

 

[3] 영적으로 죽은 상태에 있는 사람들은 삶 가운데 전투가 있을 때, 즉 선악 간 싸움이나 진리, 거짓 간 싸움으로 마음에 갈등이 일어나면 거진 다 매번 집니다. 그렇지 않을 때, 즉 전투가 없을 때는 악과 거짓이 그를 지배하며, 그래서 그는 그들의 종이 됩니다. 그의 묶임은 겉으로 드러나는데, 예를 들면, 법, 목숨, 부, 소득, 명성 등 소위 안전한 삶을 위해 중요하게 여기는 것들을 잃을까 봐 두려워하는 그런 형태로 드러납니다. 영적 인간은 전투가 있어도 늘 승리합니다. 영적 인간에게 있어서 묶임은 내적 묶임, 양심의 묶임입니다. 천적 인간에게는 전투가 없습니다. 악과 거짓의 무슨 난폭한 공격이 있어도 그는 그것들을 경멸, 무시해 버리며, 그래서 그는 정복자, 이긴 자라 불립니다. 그는 정말 그 무엇도 그를 속박하지 못합니다. 그는 자유하며, 그에게 있어 굳이 속박이라 하면 선과 진리에 대한 퍼셉션이지 싶습니다. Third: A dead man when in combat almost always yields, and when not in combat, evils and falsities have dominion over him, and he is a slave. His bonds are external, such as the fear of the law, of the loss of life, of wealth, of gain, and of the reputation which he values for their sake. The spiritual man is in combat, but is always victorious; the bonds by which he is restrained are internal, and are called the bonds of conscience. The celestial man is not in combat, and when assaulted by evils and falsities, he despises them, and is therefore called a conqueror. He is apparently restrained by no bonds, but is free. His bonds, which are not apparent, are perceptions of good and truth.
