18절, 땅이 네게 가시덤불과 엉겅퀴를 낼 것이라 네가 먹을 것은 밭의 채소인즉 And the thorn and the thistle shall it bring forth unto thee, and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.

‘가시덤불과 엉겅퀴’(the thorn and the thistle)는 저주와 황폐함(vastation)을, ‘네가 먹을 것은 밭의 채소인즉’(thou shalt eat the herb of the field)은 그가 들짐승처럼 살게 될 것을 말합니다. 속 사람이 겉 사람에게 아주 일반적으로밖에는 뭘 어떻게 할 수 없을 정도로 겉 사람과 분리된 상태에 있게 되면, 사람은 그때는 들짐승처럼 삽니다. 사람은 속 사람을 통해 주님으로부터 받는 걸로는 사람이지만, 속 사람과 분리되어 겉 사람한테서 나오는 것만으로는 들짐승이기 때문입니다. 겉 사람은 그 자체로는 들짐승과 다를 바 없어 본성, 욕구, 식욕, 공상 및 감각 면에서 비슷하며, 유기적 형태로도 그렇습니다. 그럼에도 불구, 그는 이성적으로 생각할 수 있는데, 보기엔 완전히 자신한테서 나오는 것처럼 보이지만, 사실은 어떤 영적 실체(the spiritual substance)로부터 나오는 것입니다. 그는 이걸로 주님으로 말미암는 생명의 인플럭스(入流, the influx of life from the Lord)를 받는 것이지요. 하지만 이것이 저런 인간, 곧 저런 들짐승 같은 겉 사람 안에서는 반대로 뒤집혀 악한 생명, 곧 죽음이 됩니다. 그래서 그를 가리켜 죽은 자라 하는 것입니다. By the “thorn and the thistle” are meant curse and vastation; and by “thou shalt eat the herb of the field” is signified that he should live as a wild animal. Man lives like a wild animal when his internal man is so separated from his external as to operate upon it only in a most general manner, for man is man from what he receives through his internal man from the Lord, and is a wild animal from what he derives from the external man, which, separated from the internal, is in itself no other than a wild animal, having a similar nature, desires, appetites, fantasies, and sensations, and also similar organic forms. That nevertheless he is able to reason, and, as it seems to himself, acutely, he has from the spiritual substance by which he receives the influx of life from the Lord, which is however perverted in such a man, and becomes the life of evil, which is death. Hence he is called a dead man.
