19-20절, 19여호와 하나님이 흙으로 각종 들짐승과 공중의 각종 새를 지으시고 아담이 무엇이라고 부르나 보시려고 그것들을 그에게로 이끌어 가시니 아담이 각 생물을 부르는 것이 곧 그 이름이 되었더라 20아담이 모든 가축과 공중의 새와 들의 모든 짐승에게 이름을 주니라 아담이 돕는 배필이 없으므로 And Jehovah God formed out of the ground every beast of the field, and every fowl of the heavens, and brought it to the man to see what he would call it; and whatsoever the man called every living soul, that was the name thereof. And the man gave names to every beast, and to the fowl of the heavens, and to every wild animal of the field; but for the man there was not found a help as with him.

‘이름으로 부르기’(to call by name)는 그 퀄리티를 안다는 의미인데요, 이는 고대인들은 ‘이름’(the name)을 가지고 어떤 것의 에센스를 이해했기 때문이며, 무엇을 ‘보고 이름으로 부르기’(seeing and calling by name)를 통해 그들은 자신들이 그 퀄리티에 대해 아는 걸로 이해했기 때문입니다. 그 이유는 그들은 자녀에게 이름을 지어 줄 때, 어떤 의미를 담아 주었기 때문인데요, 모든 이름은 그 안에 무언가 고유한, 그 이름으로부터나 그 이름에 의해서나, 자녀의 어떤 기원과 고유 특성을 알 수 있는, 그런 게 있기 때문입니다. 이 기원과 특성에 대해서는 주님의 신적 자비로 하고 있는, 지금 이 아르카나 주석 작업 중반, 야곱의 열두 아들을 다루는 부분에서 아시게 됩니다. 이름들에는 그렇게 이름하는 것의 근원과 퀄리티가 내포되어 있기 때문에, 이 ‘이름으로 부르기’(calling by name)를 그밖에 무슨 다른 걸로 이해할 수는 없었습니다. 이것이 그 시대 사람들의 언어적 관습이었습니다만, 그러나 이걸 이해하지 못하시는 분은 말씀에 나오는 이름들을 그런 의미들을 부여하며 읽어야 한다는 사실에 굉장히 놀라실 수도 있겠습니다. That to “call by name” signifies to know the quality, is because the ancients by the “name” understood the essence of a thing, and by “seeing and calling by name” they understood to know the quality. The reason was that they gave names to their sons and daughters according to the things which were signified, for every name had something peculiar in it, from which, and by which, they might know the origin and the nature of their children, as will be seen in a future part of this work, when, of the Lord’s Divine mercy, we come to treat of the twelve sons of Jacob. As therefore the names implied the source and quality of the things named, nothing else was understood by “calling by name.” This was the customary mode of speaking among them, but one who does not understand this may wonder that such things should be signified.
