AC.119, 창2:14, '셋째 강의 이름은 힛데겔이라'(AC.118-121)

14절, 셋째 강의 이름은 힛데겔이라 앗수르 동쪽으로 흘렀으며 넷째 강은 유브라데더라 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel; that is it which goeth eastward toward Assyria; and the fourth river is Euphrates.

‘앗수르’(Asshur)가 합리적 마인드, 즉 인간의 합리적인 면을 의미한다는 사실은 선지서들, 가령 에스겔 같은 데를 보면 아주 분명합니다. That “Asshur” signifies the rational mind, or the rational of man, is very evident in the prophets, as in Ezekiel:

여기서 합리적인 걸(The rational) ‘레바논 백향목’(a cedar in Lebanon)이라 하고, ‘꼭대기가 구름에 닿은’(the offshoot among the thick boughs)은 기억 지식(the knowledges of the memory), 바로 이 곤경(plight) 안에 있는 것들을 의미합니다. The rational is called a “cedar in Lebanon”; the “offshoot among the thick boughs,” signifies the knowledges of the memory, which are in this very plight.

 

※ 위 말씀 본문의 영어 ‘her offshoot was among the thick boughs’를 보고, 우리말 개역개정 번역 ‘꼭대기가 구름에 닿은’을 보면... 많이 빗나간 번역임을 알 수 있습니다. 가까운 번역은 ‘굵은 가지들(boughs) 가운데 있는 분지(offshoot)’ 정도가 되겠습니다.

 

※ 여기 ‘in this very plight’라고 영어 ‘plight’를 사용했는데요... 이 단어의 뜻이 ‘역경, 곤경’ 정도여서 좀 난감했습니다. Potts 번역의 시작 연도가 1905년으로, 지금부터 110여 년 전이어서, 혹시 그 사이 단어의 뜻이 좀 바뀌었나 싶기도 하지만... 저는 그냥 에스겔 31장 전후가 애굽에 대한 안타까운 말씀들이어서 그걸 감안, 그대로 ‘곤경’으로 옮겼습니다.

 

이것은 이사야에서 훨씬 더 명료합니다. This is still clearer in Isaiah:

 

23그날에 애굽에서 앗수르로 통하는 대로가 있어 앗수르 사람은 애굽으로 가겠고 애굽 사람은 앗수르로 갈 것이며 애굽 사람이 앗수르 사람과 함께 경배하리라 24그날에 이스라엘이 애굽 및 앗수르와 더불어 셋이 세계 중에 복이 되리니 25이는 만군의 여호와께서 복 주시며 이르시되 내 백성 애굽이여, 내 손으로 지은 앗수르여, 나의 기업 이스라엘이여, 복이 있을지어다 하실 것임이라 (사19:23-25) In that day shall there be a path from Egypt to Asshur, and Asshur shall come into Egypt, and Egypt into Asshur, and the Egyptians shall serve Asshur. In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Asshur, a blessing in the midst of the land, that Jehovah Zebaoth shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Asshur the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance. (Isa. 19:23–25)

 

여기와 여러 다른 구절에서, ‘애굽’(Egypt)은 기억-지식을, ‘앗수르’는 이성을, ‘이스라엘’은 지성(intelligence)을 의미합니다. By “Egypt” in this and various other passages is signified memory-knowledges, by “Asshur” reason, and by “Israel” intelligence.
