창3:4-5, 4뱀이 여자에게 이르되 너희가 결코 죽지 아니하리라 5너희가 그것을 먹는 날에는 너희 눈이 밝아져 하나님과 같이 되어 선악을 알 줄 하나님이 아심이니라 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die. For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.

모든 구절에는 교회 내 어떤 특별한 상태나 상태의 변화가 들어있습니다. 앞선 구절들에는 그들이 그렇게 기울어졌음에도 불구, 그들은 자신들의 상태가 주님 보시기에 잘못되었다는 걸 지각했다는 내용이 들어있는 반면, 이 구절들에는 막 시작된 의심, 곧 자신들이 볼 땐, 이들은 태고교회의 세 번째 후손들인데, 잘못된 게 없는데? 우리가 그동안 선대로부터 들어온 것들이 과연 맞는 걸까? 이런 생각, 이런 의심들을 하게 되면서 자신들의 눈이 열리게 될 거라는, 사실은 정반대로 오히려 더 눈이 멀어 가고 있는 건데도..., 결국 이런 식의 자기 사랑, 이렇게 자기중심적 태도가 깊어지면서, 그들은 이 정도면 우리 스스로 살아갈 수 있지 않을까?, 우리는 주님과 같아질 수 있지 않을까? 하기 시작했다는, 그런 내용이 들어있습니다. 이런 게 자기 사랑의 본질인데요, 이는 주님 따르기는 꺼리고, 대신 혼자 힘으로 살아가는 걸 더 선호하며, 믿음 관련 일들을 감각과 기억-지식으로 알아보기 위해 자기가 자기를 인도하는 그런 것이기 때문입니다. Every verse contains a particular state, or change of state, in the church: the preceding verses, that although thus inclined they nevertheless perceived it to be unlawful; these verses, an incipient doubt whether it might not be lawful for them, since they would thus see whether the things they had heard from their forefathers were true, and so their eyes would be opened; at length, in consequence of the ascendancy of self-love, they began to think that they could lead themselves, and thus be like the Lord; for such is the nature of the love of self that it is unwilling to submit to the Lord’s leading, and prefers to be self-guided, and being self-guided to consult the things of sense and of memory-knowledge as to what is to be believed.
